August 2024 – Ceasing print publication of our journals from the 2025 volumes
We are committed to ensuring our environmental impact is kept to a minimum and we are working hard to make sustainability a consideration in everything we do so have concluded that following the despatch of the final issues of our journals in 2024, we will no longer offer a print version of Development (ISSN 0950-1991), Journal of Cell Science (ISSN 0021-9533) and Journal of Experimental Biology (ISSN 0022-0949).
We are hopeful that customers who subscribe to the print only or combined print and online versions of our titles will continue to subscribe to the online only versions of Development (online ISSN 1477-9129), Journal of Cell Science (online ISSN 1477-9137) and Journal of Experimental Biology (online ISSN 1477-9145). We are delighted to announce that we have signed an agreement with Lily Journal & Book Co., Ltd to represent us in Taiwan (ROC).
June 2024 – The Company of Biologists announces move to a new submission system
All journals from The Company of Biologists are moving to a new submission system, called Editorial Manager. Editorial Manager is the leading cloud-based manuscript submission and peer review system for scholarly publications. We are making this change as we believe it will benefit authors, editors and reviewers and that it will provide an improved user experience. Use of the current submission system will be phased out, so manuscripts will only ever sit in one submission system. May 2024 – Renewal and expansion of our Read & Publish agreement with the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER)
Following the success of our 2023 Read & Publish Open Access (OA) agreement with the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER), we are delighted to announce that we have signed a renewal agreement for 2024. All four institutions that were participating in the 2023 agreement have chosen to renew, and two further institutions (IISER Bhopal and IISER Thiruvananthapuram), have joined the agreement which runs from 1 January 2024 – 31 December 2024.

We are delighted to announce that the number of institutions participating in our cost-neutral Read & Publish Open Access (OA) initiative has increased by 37% since January 2023.
825 institutions in 49 countries are now participating and we have agreements with eighteen library consortia worldwide.

January 2024 – Renewal of Read & Publish Open Access agreement between The Company of Biologists and The Max Planck Digital Library
We are delighted to announce the renewal of our Read & Publish Open Access agreement with the Max Planck Digital Library (MPDL) from 2024-2026.
Corresponding authors at Max Planck Society’s 86 institutes can continue to publish accepted research articles Open Access without charge in our hybrid journals (Development, Journal of Cell Science and Journal of Experimental Biology) and our fully Open Access journals (Disease Models & Mechanisms and Biology Open) without paying an article processing charge (APC) for a further three years.
