Working for us
We’re always looking for talented and motivated people to work as part of our close-knit team. Roles range from editorial to production, marketing to event co-ordination, HR to accounts. Our size means that you will also have the opportunity to get involved with specialist projects.
Our staff have a variety of backgrounds – with many coming from scientific research as well as from the world of publishing. It’s this mix of experience that helps us to support and inspire the biological community.
We are an equal opportunities employer and offer a competitive salary and benefits including a non-contributory pension scheme. Staff are based in our Cambridge office.
Vacancies will be posted on this page, but if you don’t see anything relevant please do still get in touch with us by emailing recruitment@biologists.com.

Chief Executive Officer
As we move into our second century, The Company of Biologists is appointing a new CEO to follow its retiring leader. This role offers the opportunity to guide the organisation’s next chapter while remaining deeply rooted in its purpose of serving the scientific community and will be based from our office in Cambridge, UK.
Reporting to a highly engaged Board of Trustees, the CEO will:
- provide clear, inclusive leadership to the senior management team and wider organisation
- set and deliver long-term strategy, balancing publishing excellence with charitable impact
- strengthen relationships with the scientific community, editors and partners
- ensure financial sustainability while enabling thoughtful investment and innovation, both within publishing and the organisation’s charitable activities
- act as an effective bridge between the Board’s scientific governance and day-to-day operations
You will bring:
- senior leadership experience from publishing, scholarly communications, a learned society or a closely aligned, mission-driven organisation
- commercial and financial confidence, alongside a strong sense of purpose and integrity
- experience working constructively with boards or trustees
- the ability to lead through influence, clarity and trust rather than hierarchy
- strong knowledge of scientific journals publishing as well as of the scientific academic community
This is a rare opportunity to lead a respected, values-led organisation with global reach, strong financial foundations and the freedom to make a meaningful difference. With our genuine appetite to innovate and reform, this role is a platform to be part of the evolving direction of scientific publishing.

Hosted internships
We offer professional internships for PhD students. Each internship is carefully defined, both with the institute and the individual, and usually involves projects with our journal teams. Each year, we host a 12-week internship with a focus on data gathering and analysis.
We are currently also looking for one or more interns to work on our community sites – the Node, preLights and FocalPlane. If you are interested in applying for either of these opportunities, please contact us at recruitment@biologists.com.
Hosted internships are funded through PhD programmes – created by funders to help further your professional development – and should be agreed with your PhD supervisor and institute.
