A tribute to Prof Alan Wilson FRS

9 March 2026

It is with great sadness that we learned of the tragic death of Prof Alan Wilson FRS on 4 March 2026. Alan was a celebrated biomechanist, working passionately to improve our understanding of locomotion in humans and animals.

Alan Wilson

In world-leading research, Alan and his team developed novel sensors, enabling the collection of advanced data by tracking animals in their natural habitats. With his passion for science, he not only impacted the fields of biomechanics and locomotion but also inspired many young scientists.

Since 2009, Alan was a dedicated member of the Board of Directors of The Company of Biologists, helping to shape several key initiatives to support the research community, especially those at earlier stages of their careers. For Journal of Experimental Biology specifically, he was a vocal advocate, as Chair of the Journal Advisory Group, as well as a regular author, reviewer and Editorial Board Member of the journal. To many, he was not only a colleague but also a friend, and his presence, energy and vision will truly be missed.

Alan was a graduate of both the University of Glasgow and the University of Bristol, a Professor of Locomotor Biomechanics at the Royal Veterinary College and a Fellow of the Royal Society. Among the wider public he was known for his work on big cats, which featured in several BBC wildlife documentaries.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends, collaborators and colleagues at this difficult time.
