Registrants for the community sites:

The Node

When you register at the Node (our community site for the developmental biology field), we collect personal information about you (your name and email address).

Registering allows you to elect to receive email alerts (weekly updates on recent posts). In addition, you can also sign up to become an Author on the Node, a Registered User of the Node Network, or a Member of the Node Network. Choosing these options may require you to enter further personal information – as detailed below.

Authors on the Node

Registrants of the Node wishing to become an Author, enabling you to post articles, events or jobs on the Node, must be given ‘Author’ privileges – for this, we will collect and will need to store your name, username and email address. You may also voluntarily provide, at your discretion, a brief biography, the website address of your personal website (if any) and details of your social media profiles.

The Node Network

FAQs on the Node Network can be found here.

For further details on use of the Node Network, please see our Acceptable Use Policy.

Joining the Node Network and provision of personal data

To access the Node Network (become a ‘Registered User’) you must first register with the Node and then request access through your profile page. Becoming a Registered User of the Node Network involves an email authentication step whereupon when you sign up, our system will send you an automated email containing a link for you to click on to complete the registration process.

To become a Member of the Node Network and to be listed in the publicly available directory, you must also provide the following information: host institution, country of institution, scientific field and career stage/position.

Should you register to become a Member of the Node Network you will have the option to provide additional personal data and sensitive information about you relating to aspects of diversity. Data protection law classifies sensitive (‘special category’) data to include race/ethnicity, LGBTQ+ identity and disability status. If you choose, as a Member of the Node Network, to provide such sensitive personal data, this will be made available only within the Node Network to Registered Users, and to The Company of Biologists. The Company of Biologists will not display this information on the Node Network without your explicit consent (requested as part of the registration process). We advise you to consider carefully before providing any sensitive personal data to be displayed on the Node Network, given the inherent risks involved in disclosing personal and sensitive information on-line.

Any personal data and special category data that you enter into your Node Network profile will be available to be viewed, used and accessed (for specific purposes only) by other Registered Users of the Node Network, but only in accordance with our Acceptable Use policy.

Our lawful basis for holding and using your personal data, and also any special category data that you provide for publication, on the Node Network, is explicit consent pursuant to Article 9(2)(a) of the General Data Protection Regulation.

We will not share any personal data or sensitive information provided for publication on the Node Network with any other third parties other than with the other Registered Users of the Node Network, who will have access to your personal data (including special category data), through the Node Network, who may be based either within or outside the EEA. Other Registered Users of the Node Network and other Members of the Node Network may contact you through the Node Network based on the personal data that you agree to publish on the Node Network and using an email contact form available on the Node Network website or otherwise. Please note that your email address will not be published on the Node Network.

As a Member and/or Registered User of the Node Network, we will send you annual email service updates to (i) keep you informed about the Node Network, (ii) provide you with information on how to use the Node Network, if any updates have been made to the site, how it is being used (iii) to help you ensure that any details you have obtained from the Node Network are up-to-date and (iv) to inform you of any changes to the Acceptable Use Policy which apply to the Node.

We share personal and sensitive data on the Node Network with the following parties:

  •  Registered users of the Node Network, within and outside the EEA.

Please note that such transfers are based on your explicit consent and you should be aware of the risks involved in transfers of personal data to countries which may not provide adequate protection for personal data, for example, there may be limited or no protection of personal data or privacy rights in such country.

Your personal data rights and withdrawing your consent

You may modify the personal data that you have uploaded on the Node Network yourself at any time simply by accessing your profile on the Node. You may also delete any or all of your personal data (including your special category data) that you uploaded onto the Node Network to be published on the Node Network completely from the Node Network yourself at any time. All you need to do is untick the Node Network box in your profile page and save your profile, and all your information published on the Node Network will be immediately and completely deleted from our systems. However, your Node account will still be active and you will remain a user of the Node, and we will retain your name and email address in relation to your Node account. To delete your Node account, an email must be sent to thenode@biologists.com. In addition, you may also contact thenode@biologists.com if you would like us to amend or delete your details from our systems, withdraw consent to the use and publication of your personal data on the Node Network, or if you have any issues regarding the Node Network.

Please note, however, that when you amend or remove your personal data from the Node Network, we will not contact all of the Registered Users and other Members of the Node Network to inform them of any such changes to or removal of your personal data on the Node Network. Therefore, we cannot guarantee that you will not be contacted by Registered Users of the Node Network who have previously viewed your profile, even after your personal data has been deleted from the Node Network. We also cannot guarantee that Registered Users of the Node Network will delete any of your personal data that they have recorded or stored in breach of our Acceptable Use Policy. However, all Registered Users and other Members have to agree firstly not to copy, store or download any personal data that they have accessed relating to other Members of the Node Network, and secondly that any time a Registered User wishes to contact a Member, this should be done using data obtained immediately prior to such contact.
