Publishing partnerships

At the heart of what we do are our five specialist journals – two of them fully Open Access. All are edited by expert researchers in the field, and all articles are subjected to rigorous peer review. We take great pride in the experience of our editorial team and the quality of the work we publish.

The Company of Biologists is a mission-driven not-for-profit publishing organisation dedicated to supporting and inspiring the biological community world-wide and is run by distinguished practising scientists.

We exist to profit science, not shareholders.

Despite our relatively small size, we are innovators in the way we do things: we were among the first to engage in transparent peer review, and to support article transfers between publishers. We continually seek to improve publishing policy and practice.

We are also keen to preserve and strengthen the long-term integrity of established quality journals within our discipline in a sustainable way.

We recognise the benefits of open access publishing: we were among the first not-for-profit publishers to offer Read & Publish agreements for librarians and were the very first publisher to have ‘transformative journals’ approved by Plan S funders.

If you are a society or other not-for-profit organisation seeking to develop and protect your journals for the overall benefit of the biology community, and are open to a potential joint venture arrangement with us, we would be happy to talk.

The Company of Biologists works with established, quality journals whose primary goal is to serve the science. As a publishing partner, we will never be able to give you the same monetary return for your programme as others, but instead will invest and build a journal around the scientists in the field, supported with active social media and additional community-building sites. We invest in quality of production, re-draw key graphical content, have in-house copy-editing experts, champion timely but uncompromised peer review, and build reader-friendly journal sites.
