We were excited to submit our paper to Journal of Experimental Biology because The Company of Biologists uses surplus processing charges to develop and implement programs that benefit our community, which is a great way to reward scientists (directly or indirectly) for their valuable volunteered time for peer-reviewing and editing. The grant that funded our work had already expired when our paper was submission-ready unfortunately, but the University of Kentucky Libraries and The Company of Biologists had a Read & Publish agreement that allowed us to publish in the journal we wanted AND make it accessible for everyone! So, I’m glad that this type of agreement exists and I hope it continues to bring in new institutions to participate.
