Our journey so far
The Company of Biologists is founded to save the British Journal of Experimental Biology (BJEB) and protect its future.
Marine biologist George Parker Bidder III becomes the Managing Director of The Company of Biologists.
Partnership between the Company and the SEB is first established.
The BJEB is renamed the Journal of Experimental Biology (JEB).
Ownership of the Quarterly Journal of Microscopical Science (QJMS) is transferred to The Company of Biologists.
The Journal of Embryology and Experimental Morphology (JEEM) is launched.
QJMS is renamed Journal of Cell Science (JCS).
The Company starts providing support to the BSCB and the BSDB.
The Company purchases ‘Bidder Building’ to house its own printing press on the outskirts of Cambridge.
JEEM is renamed Development.
The first Travelling Fellowships are launched.
The first electronic copies of journals are produced on CD-ROMs alongside print.
Embryologist and future Nobel laureate John Gurdon becomes Chair of the Board of Directors.
Disease Models & Mechanisms (DMM) is launched.
A new series of Workshops is established by The Company of Biologists.
The Node − the first community site from The Company of Biologists − is launched.
DMM becomes the first journal to switch to a fully Open Access model.
Biochemist and Nobel laureate Tim Hunt is elected Chair of the Board of Directors.
Biology Open (BiO) is launched.
The Company, journals and community sites are rebranded, including the new ‘nautilus’ logo.
Cell biologist Matthew Freeman is elected Chair of the Board of Directors.
A new community site, preLights, is launched to highlight important preprints.
A new community site and blog, FocalPlane, is launched for microscopy and image analysis.
The Company’s Sustainable Conferencing Initiative (now known as the Sustainability Initiative) is launched.
The first Read & Publish agreements come into effect.
Development, JCS and JEB are awarded Transformative Journal status and are thus Plan S compliant.
The Forest of Biologists is launched to promote biopositive publishing.
The first Global South Workshop is held in South Africa.
Developmental biologist Sarah Bray is elected Chair of the Board of Directors.
The Company celebrates its 100-year anniversary.
Our communities come together in Liverpool at the Biologists @ 100 conference.
